For me photography is a way of capturing things that can’t always be described with words. My dad does photography, so being the subject of a lot of photoshoots as a kid got me curious of what happens behind the camera. I started working as his assistant during shoots, helping with the reflector and other equipment and slowly learning more about the importance of light. Eventually I began borrowing one of my dad’s Canon cameras and, though I had no clue what I was doing at first, I immediately fell in love with photography. I love taking pictures of people, especially my sister (my first and favorite model), because I love the complexities of emotion and life that can come through a single picture.
I chose my first theme, reflections, because mirrors in art and the idea of reflections of your inner self have always intrigued me. Using the mirrors and gel lighting was challenging at first, but ultimately was really rewarding. My second theme, creativity, was chosen because I live and breathe all things creative. As someone who enjoys writing, drawing, music, and photography, art is a part of who I am, and I really wanted to explore my relationship with creativity through photos. My last theme, concerts, was chosen because of my love for music and concerts. The connection that you as an audience make with the artist and the environment make concerts one of my favorite things in the world. This particular concert was really special to me and my front row spot gave lots of opportunities for unobstructed pictures. For all of the themes I tried to incorporate a variety of compositional techniques and elements of art, but I especially wanted to focus on the use of color. A unique use of color has always been something I loved about photography but never felt confident enough to try on my own, but I wanted to push myself for my series. I think of photography as a way of looking through another person’s eyes. When you look at a photograph of anything, the angles, colors, and other elements all can reveal the values or opinions of the photographer. Photographs also reveal a lot about the subject, but it all depends on what the photographer decides to reveal. I have grown so much as a photographer, and artist, during the course of Digital Photography I and am excited to see how I continue to grow in the future. Photography has been, and always will be, an important part of my life and I can’t wait to keep taking pictures. |
